What to wear for Ireland in the Summer?

I recently went to Ireland with my family for 10 days. It was the end of May, the beginning of June, and the weather was better than expected. I was so scared it was going to be freezing! Now, you might know by now I'm a Puerto Rican living in Florida so my cold tolerance is very low. I had done my research and asked some locals on Facebook groups but as it turns out I overreacted and overpacked.

The week before our trip I was panicking, the weather apps said it would be in the high of 60 and low of 40s with rain, so we went to REI for last-minute shopping. I got myself a parka, some long-sleeved wool shirts, wool socks, gloves, beanies, and some hiking pants because they looked cute, and why not? I had already bought some compression packing cubes on Amazon (https://amzn.to/4cf5jEC) so I stuffed everything into them and felt ready. Oh boy, was I wrong! The only thing I used out of my REI trip was the socks, and one of my wool long-sleeve shirts one unusually chilly day.

Here is what I ended up wearing and would suggest packing:

  • Merino wool leggings- these are fantastic! I bought the Woolx brand, which was expensive at about $100 per pair, but if you’re on a budget, Smartwool makes them too for a fraction of the price. They were perfect for the weather and because they are made with 100% merino wool, they don't get smelly from sweat and dry very quickly making them perfect for traveling. (https://amzn.to/3xCkAjK)

  • Merino wool socks- those came in handy, for the same reason as the leggings. Plus they look super cute over the leggings with some hiking shoes/boots. I bought mine at REI at around $12-$18 per pair but you can get a pack of 5 for the same price on Amazon. https://amzn.to/3XwoVjd

  • Sweater, T-shirts and tank tops, you will need to layer, somedays you will need a tank top and a sweater, somedays maybe a T-shirt and a light rain jacket. Get solid colors that you can mix and match because you will want to re-use and save room in your luggage.

  • Rain jacket- this is essential! Forget about an umbrella, it will get in the way of the crowds or fly off in the wind. Get a lightweight rain jacket in a neutral color that will go with any outfit. Carry it around in a backpack with you at all times because rain can start suddenly when you least expect it. https://amzn.to/3zfuYi2

  • Shoes- if you plan to stay in Dublin, then any pair of geo-tex sneakers would do, but if you plan on venturing on to abandoned castles, hiking in Burren Park or the Cliffs of Moher then I suggest getting some waterproof hiking shoes or boots. You will need the traction on those rocks when they are wet. Here's the pair of Keens I have https://amzn.to/3VRyLe6

  • Jeans- I only brought one pair and that was enough, it came in handy when we were in Dublin and Galway. Days where we didn't have any excessive walking and just wanted to be casual.

Things I brought and didn't use or barely used and wouldn't pack the next time:

  • a dress

  • an extra pair of shoes

  • jean shorts

  • parka

  • hiking pants

  • long sleeve shirts

  • an oversized sweater

  • makeup (LOL, no time for that)

  • a nice purse

  • gloves

  • beanie

As for the men, my husband and kids wore nothing but jeans, t-shirts, a hoodie, and their rain jackets every day. I believe one day they wore shorts. They also had wool socks and hiking shoes, they had no issues packing. My oldest, the 17-year-old, didn't pack any long-sleeve tees or hoodies because he thought it wouldn't be too cold. Even though I told him a million times to bring one. So, on the first day, we had to stop at the mall by Grafton St to buy him a hoodie at the TK Maxx, he wore it every day after that. 🙄 ugh, men! LOL

I hope this helps you prepare for your trip, remember even though is a bit chilly you will be constantly moving and will get hot if you’re wearing thick cold weather clothing. Leggings and layers are your best friends in this kind of adventure!
